Image Conversions

Image conversions take the images and documents stored in your current software and place them in Open Dental. Most of the image conversions listed below only convert documents and scanned images. There are only a couple of image conversions listed below that convert x-rays. You can speak with a member of the Open Dental Conversion Department if you have specific questions about what types of images will convert from your current software.

A conversion of scanned documents is distinct from imaging software (usually for radiography or x-rays, intraoral imaging etc.) See Program Bridges for more information

Converting scanned documents and patient pictures is different than a data Conversion and incurs a separate fee.

  • Fees vary from $800 to $2000 depending on the complexity of the conversion and quality of images.

The "Normal Charge" cost is for scanned image directories that are less than 1 TB in size.

  • Most image conversions cost $800, most dental offices have less than 1 TB of scanned images, so $800 is the image conversion charge 95% of the time but there are a few exceptions.

The "Max Charge" cost is for scanned image directories that are greater than 1 TB in size.

  • Very few offices have more than 1 TB of scanned documents.
  • Additionally there are a couple of image conversions that are very difficult and time consuming (like MediaDent and Mogo), and so there are a few image conversions that are more expensive (as indicated in the table below).

Below is a list applications and estimated image conversion fees. If your application is not listed, we still may be able to convert, so please ask us. We are constantly looking for new ways to convert scanned documents and patient pictures.

Denticon $800 $800 $1200 Denticon is a web based software. You must contact Denticon so they can grant you access to see and download all of the images from their ftps site.  You can use FileZilla in implicit mode to download the images to your server.  Open Dental can then run an image conversion on those downloaded images.
Dentimax $800 $800 $1200 We can decrypt and export the scanned documents from the Dentimax "dcdocument.blb" files.

Dexis $800 $800 $1200 The Dexis images will be copied into the OpenDentImages folder as Dicom images where we can match the Dexis patient records to Open Dental patient records. We usually have close to 100% match rate as long as Dexis was being used in Bridged Mode. We are matching patients using the Dexis "ExternalID", so we can only perform this Dexis image conversion for Dexis version 10 (and greater) using SQL Server.
Dexis Patient ID Renumbering $300 $500 $500 We can renumber the Dexis patient IDs within the Dexis database if Dexis was used in Bridged Mode. As long as we can identify the link between the Dexis patient IDs with the Open Dental patient IDs, then we can renumber the Dexis patient IDs within the Dexis SQL Server database. This is currently only for Dexis version 10 and greater.
Dolphin $800 $800 $1200 We can convert the Dolphin images in the "Documents" folder (usually located in the "...\Dolphin\Working\Data\Documents" directory).
DOX $800 $800 $1200 We can convert the DOX scanned patient images in the "PatientDocs" folder (usually located in the "...\DOX\Letterwriting\PatientDocs" directory).
Dr. Chrono $800 $800 $1200 This image conversion will attempt to match the exported Dr. Chrono files to the converted patients based off of the file names.
DSN $800 $800 $1200 The files in the "Attachments" folder can be converted, but these images may be old if you are on a newer version of DSN. For newer versions of DSN, the image files are being stored in the SQL Server database in the 'dsnfile' table, and these images cannot be converted since they are encrypted. Please contact DSN to see if they have a process for exporting and decrypting all of the images out of the SQL Server database if you are interested in an image conversion to Open Dental.
Eaglesoft $800 $1200 $1200 We can convert Eaglesoft Smart Docs scanned documents and Eaglesoft Advanced Imaging x-rays. The mounts for the x-rays will not be identical to how they are in Eaglesoft, but the x-ray image conversion does include auto-generated mounts. You have the choice of only converting Eaglesoft Smart Docs scanned documents or only converting Eaglesoft Advanced Imaging x-rays for $800, or converting both for $1200.
