EHR: CPOE for Medication Orders

This information is old and has been replaced by the Modifed Stage 2 requirements per the Final Rule, 10/7/2015. For new requirements, see EHR Objective 3 CPOE.

EHR Stage 1: Core Measure 1
EHR Stage 2: Core Measure 1

A certain percentage of medication orders (prescriptions) must be entered by a licensed provider. This is called Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE). To count as CPOE in Open Dental, when the prescription is created, a Provider must be Logged-On.

Exclusions Available? Yes, if you write less than 100 prescriptions during the reporting period.

Stage 1: There are 3 percentage calculation options. Each is represented by a row.

  • Denominator: All patients with completed procedures during the reporting period who have a medication in their Medication List that is not an indicator of 'no medications known'.
  • Numerator: Patients in the denominator who have had a least one medication entered using CPOE.

  • Denominator: All medication orders created by the provider and entered during the reporting period.
  • Numerator:  Medication orders in the denominator entered using CPOE.

CPOE_PreviouslyOrdered: This calculation can only be used if, during the reporting period, a provider prescribes more than 100 medications, maintains a medication list of medications they did not order, and orders medications for less than 30 percent of patients with a medication in their medication list.  See https://questions.cms.gov/faq.php?id=5005&faqId=3257

  • Denominator: Patients the provider has previously ordered a medication for.
  • Numerator: Patients in the denominator with a CPOE medication order.

Stage 2: There is one percentage calculation for CPOE_MedOrdersOnly.

  • Denominator: All medication orders entered during the reporting period.
  • Numerator:  Medication orders in the denominator entered using CPOE.
