EHR: Patient Electronic Access

This information is old and has been replaced by the Modifed Stage 2 requirements per the Final Rule, 10/7/2015. For new requirements, see EHR Objective 8 Patient Electronic Access (VDT).

EHR Stage 1: Core Measure 11
EHR Stage 2: Core Measure 7

Overview

Providing electronic access means granting patients access to the Patient Portal so they can view online, download, or transmit their health information. This measure requires setting up the Patient Portal.

Stage 1: Provide patients the ability to view online, download, and transmit their health information within four business days.

Stage 2: There are two parts:

  1. Provide patients the ability to view online, download, and transmit their health information within four business days.
  2. 5% of patients must log in to the portal to view, download, or transmit their health information. This measure requires timely action by the patient.

Exclusions Available? Yes, but it is unlikely dentists will qualify.

Workflow Recommendation: To ensure patients are counted towards the ElectronicCopy measure, we recommend setting up a location in your office where patients can log-in to the portal right after you grant access.  This can work as a training tool so you can verify patients know how to log in, and patients can ask questions. While in your office, have the patient view or download their patient record and send you a test Secure Web Mail.
